While many artists have influenced Cole over the years, Dutch painter Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn has had one of the most profound and lasting effects. Throughout her career, Cole would study Rembrandt’s works to better understand color, lighting, brush stroke, composition, and other elements that informed her own techniques as an artist in general and as a portrait painter in particular. In homage, Cole would produce works—at times in conjunction with a particular series and, at other times, as stand-alone pieces—portraying the artist who has made such an impact on her career.
Cole did not have a formal series devoted to Rembrandt as she did for Leonardo da Vinci, but the number of works depicting Rembrandt makes it possible to display these pieces as a collection.
